Mitsubishi Racing has taken the wraps off its newest racing prototype set to take on next year's legendary and dangerous Dakar Rally. Called the Lancer Racing, the off-roader will replace Mitsu's successful Pajero/Montero racer first at this year's Round 6 of the FIA Cross-Country Rally World Cup in Portugal.

Although essentially a new truck, the Lancer Racing is powered by a reworked and more responsive 3.0L turbodiesel V-6 derived from the outgoing model. Upgraded turbos are said to not only raise the power upwards of 260 horsepower and 479 lb-ft torque, but aid in the unit's overall race reliability. A multi-tubular frame along with carbon-fiber bodywork ensures the Lancer stays strong and light, and at 4188 lbs it should have no problem hurdling over anything in its path. Revisions to the engine compartment are said to enhance the diesel's cooling and performance. Joined to the powertrain is a Ricardo built five-speed sequential transmission, limited-slip differential, and the necessary permanent four-wheel-drive system.

Mitsubishi's engineers and drivers under the Team Repsol banner all have high expectations for the beefed up car and plan on conquering some of the most formidable off-road races around the world. If you can't make it to Portugal in September or next year's Dakar Rally in South America, Mitsubishi has plans to display the ultimate Lancer Racing at the Paris Show in October, from which we'll be bringing you full coverage.
