In production for 29 years now, Mercedes' venerable G-Class SUV has served in the military, helped Hollywood stars escape the paparazzi, and is even used as transportation for the Pope. Prized for its distinctive old school styling and off-road ready chassis, when it comes to improving its Gelandewagen there's a limit to what the Stuttgart automaker can do. But that won't stop them from trying -- starting this September an updated G-Class will be available with a lot more power under the hood.

Virtually unchanged since 1979, the G-wagen's boxy shape is recognized around the world, and Mercedes wasn't about to make any drastic changes. The updated G is distinguishable by a new grille with three large fins instead of seven, and the top-line G500 also comes with a fresh set of 18-inch alloy wheels. Inside, Mercedes is offering a new media interface that allows MP3 players to be controlled via buttons on the steering wheel, and the automaker's COMAND infotainment system features improved voice operation that controls the SUV's stereo, navigation, and backup camera, and can be used to make calls on the driver's mobile phone.
The G's biggest changes, however, are found under hood. Current G500s are powered by a 5.0-liter V-8 making 292 horsepower and 336 lb-ft of torque -- respectable numbers, but maybe a little weak for a 5510 pound SUV. To remedy this problem Mercedes is stuffing a new, 5.5-liter V-8 into the G-wagon's engine compartment, bumping the power figures up to 382 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. Incredibly, this powerplant can hustle the massive truck from 0 to 62 mph in a scant 5.9 seconds according to the automaker, just three tenths slower than a Pontiac G8's trip to 60 mph -- that should keep the Pope from switching to a Ferrari California any time soon.
Why anyone would need a military-grade SUV as fast as a sports car will most likely seem a mystery to some, but the Gelandewagen has never been about practicality. Buyers looking for sleek styling, seating for seven, or the on-road performance of unibody construction can check out the GL, Mercedes' modern, less expensive take on the full-size luxury SUV. But for those who simply have to go retro, starting this September your ride will peel away from stoplights with a lot more authority.
