Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid
For the next model year, the Tahoe will get a dual-mode hybrid system derived from the one GM designed for diesel/electric city buses. It will have two 60-kW motors driven from a 300-volt NiMH battery pack and use two modes for the electronically controlled CVT. Using the selectable gear mechanisms and two smaller motors allows the motor/gear hardware to be contained within the transmission case. Regenerative braking is always active; the first mode is fuel off at idle, deceleration, and low-speed, light-load operation; the second mode is for cruising economy and full-power towing. Combined with AFM, aero tweaks, 10mm lower ride height, and an aluminum hood and hatch, the target is a 25‑percent increase in EPA composite ratings.
