New Dodge Commercial
As predicted at the introduction of the Chassis Cab 3500, Dodge has finished the segment with 4500- and 5500-series medium-duties. Available in regular and Quad Cab, three trim levels, 2WD or 4WD, and four CCA lengths (60, 84, 108, 120-inch), it'll carry the Cummins 6.7 (610-pound-foot rating) with exhaust brake as standard equipment; transmissions are six-speed manual or automatic. Max GVWR is 16,500 for the 4500 and 19,500 for the 5500; gross combined for either is 26,000.
in QUOTES
Tim Leuliette, CEO of Metaldyne, a major auto industry supplier: "The real culprits are our elected officials. They haven't developed an energy policy for this country."
President George W. Bush: "Let us build on the work we've done and reduce gasoline usage in this country by 20 percent in the next 10 years." Three diesel vehicles that would do just that were introduced at the Washington D.C. auto show the same week.
2008 Dodge Dakota
At the Chicago auto show, Dodge revealed the refreshed Dakota midsize pickup (on sale this summer). It receives new front-end styling, similar to that seen on the Nitro, with the addition of chrome headlight surrounds. The truck also receives a boost under the hood: Thanks to the use of two spark plugs per cylinder, increased compression ratio, improved cylinder-head port flow, and a new combustion system, the 4.7-liter V-8 is more powerful and more efficient. It puts out 60 more horsepower (now up to 290) and 10 percent more torque than the previous High Output 4.7, and Dodge claims it'll have better fuel economy, too.

F-150 Gets Bragging Rights
To keep a leg up on the competition, Ford announced a high-load version of the F-150. It carries more than 3000 pounds of payload and is rated to tow an 11,000-pound trailer. The rating's available only on regular-cab longbeds, so it beats every other half-ton max tow rating, with GM and Toyota winning on extended and crew cabs. Note the GCWR with this package is 15,800 pounds, a bit under GM and Toyota's top number.
NEWS BY THE NUMBERS
Tundra Full-Size Prices
The new Tundra starts at less than $23,000 and goes up to $42,495 for a CrewMax 4WD with the big V-8. Typically, 4WD models add $2000 to 3000 to a 2WD, and the 5.7-liter and six-speed add about $1200.
2008 Ford Mini 'Utes Get Discount
Despite a new look and mechanical updates, the 2008 Escape and Mariner will cost less than the 2007 models. Base prices: Escape, $19,245; Mariner, $21,395; Escape Hybrid, $25,740; Mariner Hybrid, $26,430.
Torque Ain't Cheap
The Jeep Grand Cherokee diesel goes for $38,475 in rear drive and $41,715 as a 4WD, increases of more than $3000 over a 4.7-liter V-8. The return is more torque on less fuel. The new pickup diesel engine option prices are up $1000-$1500 from last year.
Best and Worst Sellers of 2006
North American factories produced 2.43 million pickups last year, with the F-Series accounting for the largest share. The slowest-selling pickup was the SSR, at 826 units, a good indication why there's no 2007 SSR.
Four Doors Are In
Jeep Wrangler sales are running double last year's, and the doubled door count is getting the credit.
