The second-generation BMW X5 moves up in size-it's a tad over six inches longer and nearly 2.5 inches wider than the current X5-with improved performance, comfort, and versatility. The new South Carolina-built sport/utility (codenamed E70) will likely bow as a 2008 model. The larger vehicle has an extended rear overhang, all of which help put greater distance between the new X5 and the X3, which should allow BMW to command higher prices. Inside, the X5 promises a 5 Series-like interior. Five-passenger seating is standard, but BMW likely will offer buyers two third-row seats as optional equipment. Air suspension will be optional, and power comes from the recently upgraded 3.0 liter six as well as new 4.0- and 4.8 liter V-8s with a choice of a six-speed manual or automatic.
