Use Common Sense
Caution is always the better part of valor. Don't speed over or around an obstacle unless you know what's on the other side. Stay on the trail or in the designated recreation area. Have a clear idea of where you're headed and how to get back.

Don't ride after dark, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. Never operate any machinery while under the influence; alcohol and drug use account for most of the serious injuries weekend warriors suffer.

Always take along at least one buddy for safety; also, remember to tell the folks at home where you're going and when you expect to return.

Quick Tips
During active outdoor activities, your body needs more fluids. Don't allow yourself to dehydrate. Always bring along plenty of water or sports drink to keep hydrated and drink it often, even if you aren't working up a sweat.

When loading bikes, ATVs, or PWCs into a pickup bed, it's often easier to back the truck up against the curb before extending the load ramp. This lessens the angle at which you have to load the vehicle.

Alcohol and machinery don't mix. Never consume any drugs or alcohol before or while operating your street or recreational vehicle. Alcohol and drugs are responsible for most recreational accidents. It's dangerous and illegal in all states to operate any machinery--even bicycles--while under the influence.

Believe it or not, having fun is hard work. Fatigue causes you to be less alert. Take a 10-minute break every hour or so. Get off the machine, stretch, and walk around. Drink some water and eat a snack. Don't overdo it.

Carry a first-aid kit. Although you may not have an accident, you may be able to help someone else.--P.D.
