Wear Protective Gear
You don't see professionals get on a bike, snowmobile, ATV, PWC, boat, or any other recreational toy without first donning the proper safety gear. They know protective apparel is essential because it safeguards them from serious injury in case of an accident and helps them maintain better control of the equipment.

For example, gloves help provide a nonslip grip on dirt bikes and ATVs, while quality high-top boots protect the ankles and feet. Purchase the best-quality protective gear you can afford, and make sure it's designed for the use you plan to give it.

Take a Class
Even if you have years of riding or boating experience, odds are you can learn at least one lifesaving tip or technique simply by taking an operator's safety course.

Whether you own a PWC, ATV, dirt bike, street bike, mountain bike, snowmobile, bass boat, or ski boat, there's an association somewhere that offers a course covering your vehicle taught by a professional.

The various manufacturers within each industry sponsor the associations; their sole purpose is to teach you how to get maximum enjoyment by operating the equipment safely and sanely. Most courses are geared to an individual's experience level.

Know the Terrain
Make sure you know where you're going, be it on land or water. Study a map or chart of the area before heading out and bring it with you.

Once at the trailhead or launch ramp, study the surroundings. Check traffic, trail, or water conditions and the weather. Watch for trail markers or channel buoys, making sure you go with the flow of traffic.

This is especially important on lakes and rivers where the rules of the road and of the local waters are designed to keep everyone safe.
