Chrysler Recalls 13,509 2002-2003 Dodge Sprinter 2500/3500 for Corroded Manifolds

By Scott Evans
2003 Dodge Sprinter

Chrysler is recalling the 2002 to 2003 Dodge Sprinter 2500 and 3500 large vans, whose diesel engines are presenting its own unique problem. An unanticipated chemical reaction with the sulfur found in diesel fuel can create sulfuric acid in the exhaust channel of the intake manifold that will corrode the manifold. The corrosion can lead to an exhaust gas leak, which could lead to heat damage to the engine compartment insulation. More seriously, the corrosion could also damage to the fuel return line, which could result in a more-dangerous fuel leak, which could potentially lead to a fire. Owners of the 13,509 affected 2002 and 2003 Dodge Sprinter 2500 and 3500, which may also be badged as the International Sprinter, will have their intake manifolds replaced free of charge by Chrysler under NHTSA Recall ID. No. 09V418000.
