With 200 complaints about SUVs running away on their own, the NHTSA has issued a warning to owners of 2002-2005 Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs regarding their automatic transmissions. According to consumer complaints, the Explorer and Mountaineer SUVs were able to shift from Park to Reverse on their own, causing the lumbering beasts to roll away from their previous resting spots. Currently, the NHTSA and Ford have not gone beyond "looking further" into the claims, but should the situation escalate into a recall, Ford may be looking at transmission fixes for nearly 1.5 million SUVs.
