In a conference call with reporters, GM North America president Troy Clarke outlined the automaker's revised production schedule for plants across North America. Approximately 190,000 vehicles from the second and third quarter manufacturing schedules are to be dropped in order to better meld output with demand.
According to Clarke and company, there are three main reasons for the reworked outlooks:
1 - Dealers are already inundated with excess vehicles
2 - To bring production in line with demand
3 - To buy some more time to deal with Delphi, one of the automaker's biggest, and now bankrupt, suppliers.
By the end of March, GM bean counters noted, the brand had 767,000 vehicles in dealer's stock, some 108,000 less (a 12% decrease) than the same time last year. The below posted production halts will occur staggered, have varying durations and will depend largely on current inventory and demand.
The new outlook will find 525,000 vehicles on U.S. dealerships by the end of July.
