FEV and Raser Technologies want to show the scalability of electric drivetrains. And, if the 100 mpg claim proves true, their electric Hummer H3 ReEV should do just that when it debuts at the 2009 SAE World Congress in Detroit.

FEV collaborated with Utah-based Raser to design the electric drivetrain. The ReEV uses a 200 kW traction motor connected to a four-speed automatic transmission. A 100 kW generator receives power from a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The system, FEV claims, has a 40-plus all-electric range, returns over 100 mpg, and comes with a "minimal sacrifice of acceleration performance, cargo space, or towing capacity."

Look for more news when the 2009 SAE World Congress begins on April 20.
