Kiplinger's Personal Finance has recognized the 2009 Subaru Forester 2.5X as the "Best New Crossover" in the "Small Crossovers" category in the magazine's 2009 Car Buyer's Guide. Winners are chosen based on multiple factors, including performance, power, exterior design, interior room, cargo space, safety, fuel efficiency, and value, which are all compared with other vehicles within their respective segments.

The Forester, redesigned for 2009, was especially praised for its ability to perform well on and off concrete, thanks to Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and increased ground clearance. According to Kiplinger's, "it [Subaru Forester] performs even better on snowy roads and muddy driveways." With improved versatility, performance, and value, the Forester was a clear-shot winner.

The 2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5i was named "Best in Class" in the "Wagons and Minivans" category. The Impreza was lauded for its strong resale value, safety features, and "impressive" cargo space.
