The Ford Flex has been deemed the best truck to tackle the urban environment as the crossover has been named the Truck of the Year in the 13th annual Urban Wheel Award. Thanks to its high safety ratings, distinct features, and excellent performance on the streets, the Flex was able to capture the award over its fellow finalists, the BMW X6 and Dodge Ram.

The Urban Wheel Awards is the automotive industry's premier diversity awards ceremony and is sponsored by On Wheels Media, Inc. Some 23 judges partake in the awarding process, with the judges nominating three vehicles for both the Car and Truck of the Year awards. The truck category includes crossovers and SUVs. According to Randi Payton, CEO and president of On Wheels Media, Inc., the award was based on "the needs of urban drivers." The award would be given "looking at how the car handles in tight spaces, how it turns, how it performs on city streets."

The Flex was well-received for its overall design package and detailing and was noted for its unique touches including hidden rocker panels, a capless fuel filler, and an illuminating touch-pad locking system. The Flex is also a 5-star frontal- and 5-star side-impact crash tester and has been named the "Top Safety Pick" by the IIHS.
